A healthier alternative to the good old fashioned Christmas Rum Ball!

Gluten Free, Refined Sugar free, Dairy Free

Makes Approximately: 16-18 balls

(use organic if available)

  • ¾ Cup of Raisins
  • 1 & ½ Cups of Almond meal
  • 1 tablespoon of raw cacao powder (plus an extra couple of tablespoons for rolling)
  • 2-3 tablespoons of coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon of coconut sugar (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon of hot water
  • Natural Rum Essence/Flavouring 1-2tsp (desired amount)

Step 1 : In a large bowl place the raisins, water, coconut oil , coconut sugar if using and rum essence and stir, let sit for a few minutes to soften the raisins.

Note: I placed only half a teaspoon of the rum essence and gradually added more at step 3 until I reached the desired taste/amount, everyone’s preference with rum flavour is different.

Step 2: Place the ingredients from the bowl into a food processor and blend until ingredients are nice and smooth (some tiny lumps are fine), alternatively you could use a thermomix and blend for 20 seconds at speed 4.

Step 3: Now add the almond meal to the food processor or thermomix and continue to mix until it resembles almost a fudge-like consistency, (I did  an 20 seconds and speed 4 using the thermomix), at this stage you can taste the mixture and determine whether or not to add more of the rum essence, if you do add to it, blend through for another 10 seconds or so.

Step 4: Place the mixture in a bowl and then pop in the fridge for 20 minutes or so to allow some time to become a little less- sticky . I find this is a perfect opportunity to clean up the mess!

Step 5: Roll the mixture into small balls using your hands , rolling each ball through either some cacao powder for a more bitter-choc taste or otherwise some dessicated coconut.I find the balls rather sweet so the cacao tends to balance the sweetness,  but the kiddies may prefer the coconut.

Step 6: Chill in the fridge for 2hrs and then serve.
